Capitol Day 2008
Home Education Day at the Capitol on February 14, 2008 was a success! For the first time in a few years, the weather cooperated, and crowds of homeschoolers turned out to let our legislators get a glimpse of what we do.
Displays by various groups showed homeschoolers occupied in a wide assortment of learning activities, including extra-curricular activities and more. One display included "Where they are now," and gave information on homeschool graduates and their current lives.
All the tour groups were full as our families learned about the history of Georgia and about our state Capitol and how our government works. A Resolution adopted by the Senate and House to mark HEDC was read in the South Atrium. Several Senators and Representatives, including Representative Barry Loudermilk, a homeschool dad himself, spoke to the home school community.
Various home-educated student ensembles, including Joyful Noise, the Teacher’s Orchard, and others, provided live music in the North Atrium during the noon hour for our legislators.
Capitol Day is an annual event so please plan ahead for next year. Watch for updates and further announcements on HEIRTalk, HEIR Updates, and GAHeirWaves. Subscribe at www.heir.org. You can find much information on homeschooling in GA at the HEIR website!
If you would like to perform in 2009, please contact Susan Davis at Susan_Davis@JoyfulNoiseBand.com to be added to the schedule. Please be aware that priority is given to larger groups so that more students may have the opportunity to perform, however please indicate your interest and we will try very hard to make time for you.
Hope to see you at the Capitol!! |
