JOYFUL“NOISE MAKERS”—Preschool music program

Joyful “Noise Makers” is our music and movement preschool program. We will explore different genres of music while learning basic theory and rhythm.  We will learn about different instruments, how to play them, and even from time to time make our own instrument.  Wouldn't it be fun to have a musical parade using our own homemade instruments?  Musical games will keep the class fun and don't forget lots of movement: dancing, sign language, and hand motions.  We will explore different sounds and introduce the children to recorders to prepare them for recorder classes when they are older. We will do a ton of singing and an occasional performance.  The object of the class is to develop an ear and a passion for music.  Classes will be limited in size and divided by age.

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA-For ALL instruments; woodwinds, brass, percussion and strings!!!!

Symphony Orchestra is a new ensemble developed to further the education and experience of our most advanced string, wodwind, brass, and percussion students.  Students in this class will be learning how to play in a full orchestra while rehearsing and performing some of the great masterpieces for symphony orchestra.  Students who wish to audition for the Symphony Orchestra must have several years of playing experience.  All string players in Symphony Orchestra must also participate in Chamber Strings.  It is expected that the wind, brass, and percussion students chosen for Symphony Orchestra will also participate in their assigned band.  Auditions for Symphony Orchestra will be held at the beginning of the season.  See the calendar for details.

ADVANCED THEORY

This series of lessons will explain the seven modes of the major scale and the various forms of the Minor and Pentatonic scales. Once these concepts have been studied and processed, we will then move on to examining popular melodies in light of these scales. We will look at several genres of music and how different “styles” of music can be communicated thru the chords and melodies i.e. what makes a country tune sound “Country”? The student will then move on to combining the principles of “MOVING PAST THE MAJOR SCALE part ONE” (i.e. chordal movement) with the principles in this book to study the relationship between chords and melodies. The goal of this course is to have the student use their knowledge to write a song, utilizing what they have learned about chordal movement and melody.

ADVANCED RECORDER

Typically for third year students, this class continues to build on the student’s ability to play the recorder and read music.  This class may include more music divided into parts and harmony.  Students completing the third year of recorder should be well-prepared to advance rapidly in beginner band.
