In the jazz classes we concentrate on different types of jazz including big band and swing style music with a great emphasis on teaching students how to improvise. These classes are challenging and your students will definitely be stretched in them.
Beginner Jazz
Any student enrolled in the Advanced or Elite band may participate in Jazz Band. In addition, any piano, bass or electric guitar student who passes the audition may participate as well. It is not necessary to play in band for these three instruments. Piano students will benefit more if they have an electric keyboard to play when we have concerts away from the church, but are welcome regardless.
Required Materials: music stand, pencil, instrument and jazz book. Essential Elements for Jazz. This is not required the first week. Other needs: 1” black vinyl notebook and clear plastic sleeves will be needed to hold your music at the concert.
Advanced Jazz Ensemble
This is an audition only group. Beginner Jazz is a prerequisite. Music explored will include big band, jazz, and swing.
Students that audition and make the Elite Band are welcome to join this group, as well as students who play guitar, electric bass or keyboard that meet with the instructor’s approval.
